Most selective universities do not have official ACT score minimums, and they will ostensibly consider any applicant irrespective of his or her test scores. The average ACT scores of students accepted to these institutions, however, show that schools expect their applicants to distinguish themselves on admission tests such as the ACT. The 25th percentile of students accepted to a given university should be considered the absolute minimum level of performance required (applicants below this level usually belong to certain special categories, such as athletes or children of large donors). Competitive applications are generally characterized by test scores above the median for the most recent class of first-year students. At Dartmouth College, for example, the median ACT composite score is approximately 32, while at Georgetown University, the middle-50% ACT score range is 30-33. The best chances for acceptance will be reserved for those applicants who are able to combine above-average test scores with strong credentials in all other areas.

Meet an Istanbul ACT Tutor: Wanda S.

Wanda S., who is originally from Orlando, Florida, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (bachelor's degree in education) and the University of Minnesota (master's degree in education). She was a high school teacher in St. Paul, Minnesota for seven years, and she moved to Istanbul in 2016. She is now a faculty member at a local secondary school for international students.

Wanda has been teaching prep courses and individual tutoring for the ACT for the past six years. Her ACT students regularly receive upper-percentile scores on all sections of the ACT, and they are frequently offered admission to top American universities. Wanda spends most of her leisure time traveling to cities in Western Europe. She is particularly partial to London and Paris.
