Students preparing for the TOEFL must begin with a clear understanding of the TOEFL requirements associated with their chosen degree programs. It is not unusual for two different degree offerings within the same department of the same university to have two different sets of TOEFL benchmarks. A number of considerations go into the establishing of TOEFL minimum requirements, including university selectivity, subject matter emphasis, degree level, and type of admission. At most universities, a total score of 100 and sectional scores of 25 each will satisfy TOEFL requirements, but applicants should not assume that this is the case. Candidates for teaching assistantships, for example, are often expected to produce even higher scores, especially on the TOEFL's speaking section. Penalties for low TOEFL scores can range from outright rejection to remediation in the form of additional English study. Remediation is almost always more costly and time-consuming than TOEFL prep.
